Originally, a dining table would have been nothing more than a plank of wood, a board on a trestle. Alongside it would be another board from which to serve the food – hence, a sideboard. Over the years, it became a more formal piece of furniture, coveted by wealthy households as a status symbol, used to store and display the finest china, silverware and glass.
Today, the versatility of the sideboard has earned it a lifelong place in our households, but it has long since evolved from something purely functional into an eye-catching, stunning piece of design.
